Used as a research chemical in biochemical and enzymatic assays; as a chromogenic substrate for lipases, esterases, and phospholipases – enzymatic hydrolysis releases 4-nitrophenol (p-nitrophenol), which can be quantified spectrophotometrically at 400–410 nm (yellow color in alkaline conditions); as a model substrate for studying fatty acid ester hydrolysis and transesterification; in the development of high-throughput screening assays for enzyme inhibitors and activators; used in lipid metabolism research and food chemistry studies; the (9E,12E)-dienoate configuration represents the trans, trans isomer of linoleic acid (as opposed to the natural cis,cis isomer).
